Got spiders? What kind are in Nebraska?

Got spiders?

Do you want to be able to determine which are safe and which aren’t? If you are like me, any spider is a bad spider. I hate them all. They give me the heebie-jeebies.

The Nebraska Extension office has published an informative report that explains all varieties of Nebraska spiders and includes images so you can differentiate between them.

NE Extension Identification Guide to Common NE Spiders

If you are like me and want all spiders eradicated from your home, call Dave at D&K Pest Services, 303.947.9419. We offer family and pet-friendly products (but not friendly to those darn spiders).

Bed bugs…ewww…

What do I need to know about bed bugs?

What should I know about bed bugs?

Beg bugs are super tiny insects that have flat bodies so they can get into tiny spaces. If you have them, they will live in your mattresses, box springs, bed frames, and headboards. They hang out on or near your bed because they come out at night to feed? What do they eat? – blood.

Having bed bugs has nothing to do with your housekeeping skills. They can travel into your home from used furniture, your luggage, or on your person.

Because they only feed at night, you may not see them. You might only know they are there because of some small bites you might receive while you are sleeping. These small bites may show up in a line on your skin as the bed bug bites you while traveling across your body.

What are some of the signs you have bed bugs?

  • Bloodstains on your sheets

  • Dark or rusty spots on your sheets, mattresses, nightclothes, or walls – this is the bug’s excrement (bug poo)

  • Bed bug egg shells or shed skins

  • Dead beg bugs in or around your bed (where there is one, there are likely many more)

  • Musty odor (bed bugs have nasty scent glands)

What can I do to get rid of these nasty critters?

  • First, wash EVERYTHING (bedding, linens, curtains, clothing) in hot water and then place in the dryer on the highest setting for at least 30 minutes.

  • For items that can’t get wet, stick them in the dryer on high for 30 minutes.

  • Use a stiff brush to scrub your mattress seams to remove bed bug eggs and then vacuum the mattress and other surfaces.

  • Purchase a mattress cover (tightly woven and zippered). Because bed bugs can live up to a year without feeding. Keep that mattress covered!!!

    • To be brutally honest, if your mattress is infested, you might just want to dump it and get a new one.

  • Bed bugs like cracks. Repair any cracks and crevices where they might hide.

  • Keep clutter away from your bed.

  • And finally, Hire D & K Pest Services to service the infested area. Getting rid of bed bugs can require multiple treatments.
